Medical-grade 20-30 mmHg

Two questions. Your exact compression size.

Most compression brands size by shoe size alone — which is how you end up with socks that roll, pinch, or sit in a drawer. Graduated compression only works when it fits. Sixty seconds, no email required.

The fit problem

Why sizing is the whole game

Graduated compression isn't a uniform squeeze. A true 20-30 mmHg sock is engineered to be strongest at the ankle and to ease off gradually up the calf — that's what the two numbers describe, measured in millimeters of mercury. The gradient is the product, and it's knit into the sock at specific circumferences. It only lands where it was designed to land if the sock actually matches your leg.

That's why clinical fitters measure the ankle and calf before handing anyone a compression garment — and why brands that size by shoe size alone get it wrong so often. Feet and calves don't scale together. Too small, and the sock pinches and rolls at the cuff. Too big, and the gradient the sock was built around never lines up with your leg. Shoe size is only a starting estimate. Size from your ankle measurement — that is where the 20-30 mmHg is delivered — and check that your calf falls inside the same size's range. A soft tape measure is what settles it.

Size U.S. shoe size Ankle circumference Calf circumference
M Women 5-7.5 7-8.25 in 11-13.5 in
L Women 8-10.5 · Men 7-9.5 8.25-9.25 in 13.5-15 in
XL Women 11+ · Men 10-12.5 9.25-11 in 15-16.5 in
Size by your ankle measurement — that is where the 20-30 mmHg is delivered. If your calf falls outside the range for that size, you need a wide-calf garment rather than a different size in this style: email info@ovenahealth.com and we'll help. Don't size down, and don't size up to make a calf fit.

Compression levels, decoded

Know your numbers

Most "compression" sold online is 15-20 mmHg — or carries no rating at all, which means nobody verified that a gradient even exists. Ovena is true graduated 20-30 mmHg: knit to spec, checked at the factory, from a company that makes clinical wound-care products for a living.

Level What it is Where you'll find it
8-15 mmHg Barely-there squeeze Sheer and fashion hosiery
15-20 mmHg Everyday light Most lifestyle "compression" brands
20-30 mmHg Medical grade — the 20-30 mmHg level clinicians commonly recommend Ovena lives here
30-40 mmHg Firm — clinician-directed Fitted in clinical settings

From a wound-care company, not a lifestyle brand

Ovena was founded by David Chahine, MD, and built its name in clinical wound care — dressings made in ISO 13485-certified facilities, where specs get verified rather than assumed. The compression line is held to that same standard: true graduated 20-30 mmHg, knit to spec and checked at the factory.

The design brief was simple: real medical-grade compression that doesn't look medical — socks you'd actually choose to put on, at the 20-30 mmHg level clinicians commonly recommend.

Fit questions, answered

How do I measure my calf?
Use a soft tape measure, ideally in the morning before you've been on your feet. Wrap it around the widest part of your calf — snug, not tight — and note the number in inches. If you want the most precise fit, also measure your ankle at its narrowest point, just above the ankle bone, and compare both numbers to the chart on this page.
What if I'm between sizes?
The bands overlap, so measurements on a boundary are normal. Size by your ankle — that is where the 20-30 mmHg is delivered. If your calf falls outside the range for your ankle size, a wide-calf garment is the right answer rather than a different size in this style; email info@ovenahealth.com and we'll help. Don't size down, and don't size up to make a calf fit.
Can I wear these while pregnant?
Many people wear graduated compression through pregnancy, and many OBs suggest it — ask yours what makes sense for you. Ovena's socks are the same true graduated 20-30 mmHg across the line; your OB can tell you whether that's the right level for you and when to wear them. New, sudden, or one-sided leg swelling should be evaluated by a clinician before you use compression.
When should I talk to a clinician first?
Compression isn't appropriate for everyone: peripheral arterial disease, decompensated heart failure, severe neuropathy, a skin infection over the area, or an untreated or suspected DVT all call for clinician guidance first. New, sudden, or one-sided leg swelling should be evaluated by a clinician before you use compression. Also talk to your clinician first if compression was recommended after surgery or a procedure, if you have ongoing leg symptoms, or if you're managing any diagnosed condition — and follow their guidance on level and wear time.
